Umpires 2012
Dear Clubs, Committees and Parents,
My name is Carl Fletcher and I work with the AFL as the Umpire Development Officer for Greater Sydney and Northern NSW. I am writing to seek your support and assistance in putting in place an effective umpiring structure for the Central Coast in 2012. Currently the region is without an Umpire Manager for 2012 and this is where I need clubs and parents input in order to find the right people. I would like to thank Gavin Cornish and Paul Best who managed the group in 2011 for their work in supporting the junior umpires and clubs across the region.
In summary, the roles that need to be performed are:
Umpire Manager – Sits on the Regional Committee and is a voting member. Communicates decisions and instructions to umpire group. Communicates with umpires and follows up match incidents such as code of conduct issues and player reports.
Umpire Appointments – Manages appointments of all matches in the regions. Roughly 18 – 20 matches requiring two umpires per match.
Umpire Coaches - Provide weekly umpire training sessions and coaching at weekend matches. The region has training resources for the group, and I would provide coaching resources and help in the development of a coaching plan
These roles can be combined or kept as they are. In the end the more people we have involved the easier the work load is.
In seeking volunteers for these positions I am looking for positive, engaging and enthusiastic people. I would work closely with volunteers involved to provide resources and advice in order to learn and understand the role. These roles can be very rewarding as you see young people develop confidence, leadership and decision making skills.
Anyone that is interested in being involved or finding out more doesn’t need to be an umpire. If you have good administration skills then you might be suited to the Manager/Appointments roles. While if you have been involved in AFL as a coach, or been involved in sport as a referee then these skills can help. Former team coaches can provide valuable insights to young umpires in learning and understanding the game.
If you are interested or you know of someone that might be interested please get in contact with me. I can be contacted via this email addresscarl.fletcher@aflnswact.com.au or via mobile on 0425 256 504.
While if you have any questions or thoughts on how we can improve umpiring then please let me know
I look forward to hearing from you and working with you all in the build up to football in 2012
Cheers
Carl
